The UNESCO World Conference on Education for Sustainable Development was held from 17 to 19 May in Germany. Participants could also join a livestream. The conference is organized with the support and participation of Federal Ministry of Education and Research, Germany.

Over three days, the plenary sessions focused on best ways to harness education to address interconnected global challenges such as climate change, biodiversity loss, green and circular economies, technological advancement and education-based sustainable relationships with the planet. The conference also explored the ways to reinforce the capacity of educators, empower youth and take local actions through Education for Sustainable Development.

The World Conference brought together over 2,500 participants from around the world, including 80 education ministers and key professionals committed to the transformation of education so that all learners can address the climate crisis, biodiversity loss and all the other sustainable development challenges.

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has set a new target: to make environmental education a core curriculum component in all countries by 2025.

Education must prepare learners to understand the current crisis and shape the future. To save our planet, we must transform the way we live, produce, consume and interact with nature. Integrating education for sustainable development into all learning programmes must become fundamental, everywhere. Audrey Azoulay UNESCO Director-General

The round table discussions of the conference were also devoted to the implementation of Education for Sustainable Development for 2030 (ESD for 2030). In light of the climate crisis, biodiversity loss and other environmental challenges, the ministerial roundtable discussed emerging challenges and opportunities for ESD at the country level, and presented the plans and commitments of Member States to implement ESD for 2030.

At the end of the conference, all participants are called upon to commit to the Berlin Declaration on Education for Sustainable Development, that outlines a range of policies encompassing teaching, learning, professional training and civil engagement.
